A preliminary evaluation of adhesion promotor influence on barrier properties of glass flake filled epoxy coatin
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in Nyquist system was applied to study the corrosion behaviour of glass flake epoxy coatings on steel substrate with and without an adhesion promoter in an aqueous NaCl solution. The general principles of the method were presented. The samples were exposed for one year to 3% aqueous NaCl solution at room temperature. The impedance data show that improvement of the protective behaviour of the coating is connected with a large increase in the electric resistance in the pores of coating. These effects are probably due to an improvement in initial, wet and recovered adhesion between glass flakes and the epoxy binder. Results of peel-off adhesion tests are also presented; they are consistent with the impedance method results.
