Computer-aided design for side-fed annular dies

Summary

CAD-developedof side-fed annular dies equipped with a cylindrical or a tapered mandrel canextrude materials of a high thermal and mechanical homogeneity. The mainconditions of such extrusion are: the uniform outflow velocity of the materialand the uniform action of shear stresses on the material being extruded. On thebasis of the thus-formulated conditions, the present procedure for designcalculations was presented making use of the concept of the representativeviscosity. A computer program was elaborated to rapidly design side-fed annulardies — it determines the geometrical parameters of the tool and the main flowcharacteristics of the material in relation to the assumed dimensions of theproduct, technological parameters of the process and material type. The programwas used for the example of side-fed annular die with tapered mandrel in acomputer simulation of the effects of the extrusion conditions (materialtemperature, mass flow intensity, and product thickness and internal diameter)on the pressure drop, residence time and temperature increase in the material.As material, LDPE of the Politen II 003/G0 type was used.
