Summary

Processing pioneers and their most important achievements have been described. The role, significance and scope of processing has been depicted against world's and Poland's production per capita over 1950—1993. Attempts to incorporate processing into different disciplines and the factors proving that it is an independent scientific discipline and didactic and professional speciality have been described. Advantages and disadvantages of processing and particular processing methods have been presented in relation to relevant machines, tools and devices. Six modem directions in the processing methods and their commercial viability have been characterized. Processing literature has been commented and dispersal of papers criticized. The „roots" and presence of processing and research workers' attitude towards, and vocation for, have been remarked upon.
