The autothermicity space in the feed zone of a screw extrude

An analytical model ofthe feed zone, allowing for thermal processes, has been used to establish the condition of autothermicity in this zone. Calculations have shown a feed zone can be designed in which the material takes up enough heat to melt. Spatial diagrams are presented to delineate parameter ranges (design features) within which autothermicity occurs in the feed zone. This is very advantageous because rapid melting of the material in the whole volume brings about good plastification. Utilization of the predicted effect can considerably change the design and the mode of action of the plastification zone of a screw extruder. Some difficulty in this solution arises from high helicity of the grooves on the cylinder, lengthening the path of material in the cylinder and intensifying friction wear
