Thermal efficiency of injection moulds

Summary

The energy balance of injection moulds has been presented for mouldings with varying wall thicknesses and, on this basis, a method for determining the thermal efficiency of injection moulds has been proposed. The coefficient of thermal efficiency &#951 allows for the energy consumption varying with the temperature and pressure of the injection moulding process and with the thickness of moulding. The experiments carried out with polypropylene revealed an essential effect of the moulding thickness: the higher the thickness (over 0.5—1.5 mm), the lower there value, all primarily on account of the prolonged cooling time. Knowledge of &#951 allows to compare various injection moulds and to select optimum injection moulding conditions.
