Summary

Synthesis of DBBD was described and its solubility was measured in various polyols used to make rigid and flexible polyurethane (PUR) foams. The data obtained were compared with the solubilities of a conventional domestic flame retardant, dibromoneopentyl glycol (DBNPG). The high solubility (20—25%) in polyols used to make rigid PUR foams makes DBBD a good reactive fire retardant for the self-extinguishing foams. The low solubility of DBBD in the polyols used to make flexible PUR foams requires DBBD to be used in combination with the more soluble DBNPG.
