Summary

A brief review of the papers by the researchers from the Institute from the period of 1956— 1991 in the field of unsaturated polyester (UP) resins was presented and main trends in these investigations at the Industrial Chemistry Research Institute were discussed. During the last ten years these investigations were concentrated on the following: reduction of styrene emission in the manufacturing of glass fiber reinforced polyesters (GRP), problems connected with smoke emission during combustion of GRP; increase in the glass transition temperature of UP resins by incorporating them as components of interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN and semi-IPN); and sunlight curing of the sensitizer containing UP resins.
