Summary

A review covering physicochemical, thermal and mechanical properties of aromatic polyamides (aramides) with particular reference to melting, glass transition and decomposition-in-air temperatures of commercial products (Table 1), and crystal structure, solubility, chemical, thermal and thermooxidative resistance, and liquid crystal solutions. The molecular parameters of poly(p-benzamide) (PBA) and (ш-phenylene isophthalamide) (m-PFIFA), evaluated from viscosimetric measurements, are compared with the calculated values (Table 2). Manufacturing process and properties of aramide fibers (especially ones endowed with a high Young's modulus) are described and major application directions are delineated.
