A correlation between thermooxidative decomposition and hydrolysis of polycarbonates. RAPID COMMUNICATION (in English)

Experimental data concerning the initial apparent activation energy of thermooxidative decomposition (based on own results by the thermal analysis methods) and the rate of hydrolysis were compiled for three types of polycarbonates (PC) of different chemical structure, namely for: PC-A (bisphenol-A PC), PC-C [PC from l,l-dichloro-2,2-di(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethylene] and PC-M (PC from tetramethylbisphenol-A). A good correlation between these two sets of results was observed. It can be suggested that both processes are initiated by cleavage of ester linkage. Shielding of ester groups by CH3 groups in the case of PC-M increases its resistance both to hydrolysis and to thermooxidative degradation.
