Acceleration of curing of epoxy resins with elementary sulphur

Summary

It was found that elementary sulphur (S) dissolved in epoxy resin (EP resin) considerably accelerates the process of crosslinking of the resin with polyamines. Efficiency of S depends on the basicity of the polyamine hardener and on the type of thinner. In alkaline medium, S is a source of thiirane groups with considerable reactivity towards polyamines. The accelerating effect of S is comparable to the accelerating action of salicylic acid (SA). A S + SA mixture has a synergetic effect. Acceleration of the curing reaction of EP resin by the addition of a system composed of 1% S and 1% SA was observed at temperature as low as 5°C. This acceleration with S or with S + SA did not cause any essential changes in properties of the cured EP resins.
