Unsaturated polyester resins with enhanced chemical, thermal and mechanical resistance

The synthesis of polyester from neopentyl glycol and isophthalic acid in a two-stage process has been described. Effective catalysts of this synthesis have been selected. It has been found that a particularly positive effect have phosphorus-containing catalysts, especially a composition of phosphoric acid with molybdenum oxide. The strength properties, heat resistance and chemical resistance of these resins have been compared with analogous properties of resins obtained without neopentyl glicol. A positive role of this glycol — especially in relation to thermayl and chemical resistance — has been confirmed.
