Summary

Mathematical models are presented for the flow of a polymer melt through some selected dispersive and distributive sections of nonconventional screws (torpedo section, fluted mixing section, and mixing ring section). These models as well as other models describing the hopper, conveying of the solid, melting, conveying of the melt, and the die, were used to develop a computer program to predict pressure and temperature profiles, solid bed profile, and power consumption in the extruder. To study the effect of screw speed on the solid bed profile along the length of the screw, simulations were made of pressure, temperature and solid bed profiles in a screw equipped with the mixing ring section.
