Summary

A mathematical model describing the preplastication zone in the extruder cylinder was presented and on its basis a computer program was prepared permiting the determination of pressure distribution and of power requirement in this zone. By means of this program, a computer simulation of the preplastication process in that zone was carried out. It was fund that the presence of a thin layer of the plasticated material at the material—cylinder interface prevents build-up of high pressure and high energy consumption in the initial portion of cylinder. A nonmonotonic character of pressure changes in the preplastication zone was observed, caused by the dependence of this pressure on tangential stress in the layer of plasticated material, which in turn depends on the shear rate and temperature.
