Adhesion promoting systems in tyre rubber mixtures for rubber/brass-coated steel cord systems

Test results of optimation of rubber/brass-coated steel cord adhesion systems were presented. Adhesion promoters were based upon boroncobalt salts, resorcinol-formaldehyde resin (SRF), a donor of methylene groups (hexamethoxymethyl melamine — HMMM) and silica. A typical rubber wire breaker formulation with high sulfur level was used in the production of tyres. The best results of adhesion before ageing as well as salt-solution, humidity and hot ageing resistance were achieved using the formulation with the following range of adhesion agents (phr): 0.075—0.12 cobalt salt (as pure metal), 4.75—5.5 sulfur, 2.7—8.9 precipitated silica and 3.8—4.6 SRF / HMMM resin.
