Aliphatic hydrocarbon resins from unsaturated C5 hydrocarbon fractions obtained from steam-pyrolyzed gasolines

An unsaturated C5 hydrocarbon fraction prepared from steampyrolyzed gasoline from the Olefin Pyrolysis Plant at Petrochemia Płock S.A., was found suitable for preparing 72-hexane-solublepale resins, softening temperature 55—102°C and molecular weight 917—1531. The hydrocarbon resins were prepared by cationic polymerization in the presence of AlCl3 — cumene complex used as catalyst. Effects were studied of the starting composition of the feed (diene/monoolefin weight ratio, additive sincluding aromatic and vinylaromatic hydrocarbons) and conditions of the polymerization (temperature, catalyst amount) on the physicochemical properties of the resins. Prior to polymerization, the hydrocarbon feed should be thermally treated to remove compounds (primarily cyclopentadiene) that cause gelation during the polymerization step.
