An assessment of the resistance of plastics to ageing

Polimery 1989, No 9, 392

DOI: dx.doi.org/10.14314/polimery.1989.392

Summary

A new quantity used for the assessment of the effect of long-term exposure on the strength properties of plastics has been described. It is called coefficient of sensitivity to ageing. ηs, and its derivative — relative coefficient of sensitivity to ageing, ηwz. It makes allowance for the path of transition from the initial to the final state as well as for the statistical spread of the measuring results of a definite property. The experimental tests on some selected plastics — non-reinforced and reinforced polyamide 6 and polyethylene terephthalaie) — and the determination of the selected strength properties have confirmed the usefulness of the ηs and ηwz quantities as well as the necessity of considering the time of ageing in the modification of fatigue diagrams and of certain formulas used in the strength calculations (Hooke's law, mixing rule).
