Analysis of swelling degree and gel fraction
of polylactide/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) blends crosslinked by radiation

DOI: dx.doi.org/10.14314/polimery.2018.1.4

Summary

The swelling degree (Xs) and gel fraction (Fz) of the blends of polylactide (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) crosslinked by using electron radiation in the presence of triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) have been determined. The effects of radiation dose and weight ratio of both components of the blend on the values of Xs and Fz were examined. The lowest swelling degrees and simultaneously the highest gel fractions were observed in PLA and the blends with dominating content of PLA after irradiating them with adose of 40 kGy or more. It was also found that the swelling degree of the blend increased and its gel fraction decreased with an increasing weight fraction of PBAT. This indicates a lower susceptibility of PBAT to radiation crosslinking than that of PLA.
