Application of waste polycarbonate-furfurol thermolyzates to modification of petroleum bitumens

Summary

Thermolysis of waste polycarbonate (PC) mixes with furfurol extract (EF) having various compositions, conducted for 3.5 hours at 270 °C led to thermolyzates containing 95—80% by weight PC and 5—20% by weight EF. Thermomechanical and rheological properties as well as hardness and impact strength of the thermolyzates were determined (Tables 3 and 4). Increased EF content in the thermolyzate lowered softening and melting points; impact strength of thermolyzates is lower than for unrnodified waste PC. PC-EF thermolyzate (up to 20% by weight) heated to 170 °C with PS 85/25 asphalt leads to homogeneous compositions (Table 1). Increased content of the thermolyzate in the composition decreases softening and dropping point, as well as slightly increases brittleness; however, penetration of the composition is not altered (Table 5). Characteristics of the bitumen — PC-EF thermolyzate composition points to their possible application as binders in sealant/isolation materials for construction purposes.
