Assessment of the effects of laser marking of surface layer of polypropylene molding

Summary

The influence ofthe modifier (absorbent) content and variable laser processing parameters on the effectiveness of laser marking of polypropylene moldings was evaluated. The hue and color saturation as well as geometrical features of the surface of the plotted graphical signs were determined using optical spectrophotometer and confocal microscope. It was found that the quality of marking was significantly affected by the width of the beam paths, the frequency of pulses and the color of the investigated surface. The effect of adding an absorbent to polypropylene depends on the color of the sample. The best results of laser marking were achieved for white samples with high modifier content.
