Assessment of the possibilities of reutilization of waste laminates for production of abrasives

Summary

Abrassion data (Table 3), friction coefficient (m) data and m vs. temperature plots up to 350°C (Figs. 5 and 6) are presented for abrasives containing 4 wt.% of charred materials prepared from duroplast-based waste laminates (Table 1). The study was intended to explore the possibilities of reusing vaious end-of-life laminates based on phenol resins, epoxy resins and silicone resins reinforced with glass fibers, paper, cotton or mica, as precursors of carbonized materials endowed with the glassy-carbon amorphous structure. Derivatography alone, and coupled with chromatography (Fig. 4), of this type of waste materials allowed to establish the parameters of carbonization. By way of illustration, addition of carbonized (phenol resin + cotton) and (epoxy resin + glassfiber) waste laminates had a beneficial effect on m and on the stability of m with temperature.
