Polimery 1992, No 6, 251

DOI: dx.doi.org/10.14314/polimery.1992.251

Some methods of the synthesis of calyciform aromatic hydrocarbons, commonly named calixarenes, were discussed, as well as the methods of their modification, including the synthesis of polycyclic compounds. Calixarenes have the property to selectively bind cations and absorb molecules and they can be used as phase transfer catalysts. Because of a complex structure of calixarenes the computer graphics with the application the software package (MOLCAD molecular modelling) elaborated at the Darmstadt Technical University was used in their study. There were presented original photos revealing the structure of various calix[4]arenes generated on the monitor display of the Silicon Graphics computer. Some potential applications offered by the computer modelling of molecules with the CAMM method are reviewed.
