Capillary-plastometer evaluation of the degree of gelation of poly(vinyl chloride) plasticates

Conditions were optimized for the determination of MFR of plasticized PCV blends to achieve the largest difference in MFR of weakly and strongly gelated specimens. The conditions established (force acting on plastometer's injection ram, 400 N; cylinder temp., 150°C) were used to study the relative degree of gelation (G) of four PVC plasticates (gelled within 115°C to 190°C) in relation to MFR. The relation was found to be linear (Fig. 13, eqns. 2a—2d). Thus, a single MFR measurement suffices to establish G of PVC blends gelled at various temperatures (Fig. 12).
