Carboxycellulose ester of 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropane as a new cellulose derivative with reduced flammability

Summary

Carboxycellulose prepared by a partial selective oxidation of cellulose with nitro gen dioxide has been reacted with glicerol epichlorohydrin with the formation of carboxycellulose ester of 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropane containing about 7.0 % of chlorine. It exhibits interesting film-forming properties and reduced flammability. The structure of this product has been defined basing on the results of spectroscopic and chemical analysis of some selected groups.
