Cationic polymerization of glycidol

Summary

Two possible mechanisms of the cationic polymerization of glycidol were presented, namely the mechanism with active chain-ends and the mechanism with activated monomer. On the basis of a detailed analysis of 13C-NMR spectra the effect of conditions of the cationic polymerization of glycidol (type of initiator, temperature) on the structure of polymers (content of 1,3- and 1,4-units and of branches) was characterized. It was concluded that the lower limit of the participation of the activated monomer mechanism depends on the type of initiator in the following manner: SnCl4 (about 80%) > BF3·OEt2 (50—70%) > trifluoromethanesulphonic acid ~ trifluoroacetic acid (about 50%).
