„Chameleonic" properties of poly(vinylpyrrolidone)

Cohesion parameters of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), structural unit of PVP and its low-molecular-weight analogs (N-methylpyrrolidone, Nethylpyrrolidone, and N-vinylpyrrolidone) were estimated experimentally (e.g. by means of limiting viscosity number measurements) and were calculated (e.g. by means of Van Krevelen and Hoftyzer molar attraction contributions or by means of Askadskii's method, using the van der Waals volumes). The obtained values of the total, dispersion, polar and hydrogen bonding cohesion parameters suggest that PVP, depending on the chemical nature of the solvent, may have different values of these cohesion parameters. On this ground, the „chameleonic" properties have been ascribed to PVP, which are understood as the change of the chemical nature of the substance with the changes in its environment.
