Changes in free monomer content in homo- and copolymers of winyl chloride during their storage and processing

The method of gas chromatography in the ,,head space ” version has been applied in the studies on the decrease of free vinyl chloride monomer during the storage of PVC and a VC - VAC - copolymer with in a period of up to 3.5 months. The highest rate of decrease of VC content has been observed during the first two weeks of storage. The free monomer content has also been determined in samples of raw material, semi - products and final products collected in various stages of rigid film production for food packaging. Storage of films only in considerably diminishes their VC content. It has been shown that it is possible to obtain films with a low VC conten (< 1 mg/kg) by using PVC or VC - VAC copolymer containing not more than 10 mg VC/kg. This can be attained by storing these raw materials for about one month.
