Changes in the superficial layer of polyethylene film due to partial discharges

The mechanism and a characteristic of changes taking place in the superficial layer of polyethylene film during its activation with partial discharges in the air atmosphere have been presented and a critical evaluation of several instrumental methods applied in the studies of the superficial layer of polymer films carried out. Own experimental results obtained by scanning electron microscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy methods for superficial layers activated with partial discharges in air atmosphere on specimens of low density polyethylene films for various multiplicities of activation have been presented. This multiplicity, controlling the unit energy of activation, affects the geometrical changes in the surface of the activated film. The difficulties and limitations in studies of the changes in chemical structure of this activated film under the action of partial discharges with an intensity used in the industrial activation processes (unit energy of activation below 104 J/m2) have been pointed out
