Summary

Thixotropic compositions (for details see [16]) of unsaturated polyester resins (POLIMAL 103) and low-M compound-modified smectite clays (bentonites) were Theologically characterized in terms of the absolute thixotropy index (TI). The index defined as the ratio of apparent viscosities at zero shear rate and at infinite shear rate was evaluated from apparent viscosity vs. shear rate curves established with the aid of Haake's RheoStress RS 100 plate-plate oscillatory (50 Hz) rheometer and a Rheotest 2 cylinder-cylinder rheometer at 25C. Results were correlated (eqn. 2); viscosities were evaluated at zero and infinite shear rates and hence TI was calculated (Table 1). The area under the flow curves was interpreted as the energy required to destroy the thixotropic structure of the composition.
