Chlorination of natural rubber vulcanizates in chlorine solutions in halogenated hydrocarbons

Summary

It has been shown that the exposure of rubber to the action of Cl2-solution in carbon tetrachloride causes a decrease in the coefficient of friction without negatively affecting the mechanical properties of rubber. The optimum reaction conditions have been established; they are: duration 10—20 s; Cl2-concentration in CCl4 — 0.06 — 0.12 wt. %; temperature 283 K. A flowsheet of the plant has been presented and guidelines for the design of the chlorination process for the windscreen wipers by this method have been presented.
