Coating with lacquers of thermoplastics

Polimery 1988, No 4, 151

DOI: dx.doi.org/10.14314/polimery.1988.151

A nitrocellulose-based enamel designated for painting of ABS plastics has been developed in Poland and its production started. Contrary to expectations this enamel reveals no good adhesion to high-impact polystyrene (PS-HI). No positive results gave addition to the enamel of active, xylene-containing diluents with the aim to enhance enamel adhesion to PS-HI, because such solvents give wrinkled and uneven coatings due to a strong swelling of the substrate. Coatings of good adherence and appearance have been obtained by the application of a colourless acrylic primer under the enamel layer. This primer is a dilute solution of poly(methyl methacrylate). It is necessary to match the diluent of this acrylic primer with the working conditions and type of spraying equipment.
