Comb-like liquid crystal polymers based on chain polycarbosilanes

A series of chemical transformations is presented, leading to sidechain polycarbosilanes with different main chain structures. In the first step, linear policarbosilanes were prepared via ring-opening polymerization of strained cyclic monomers — 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-1,3-disilacyclobutane and 1-methyl-1-silacyclobutane in the presence of transition metal complexes as catalysts. Molecular weight of the polymers varied from 1800 to 40 000. Side-chain smectic polymers were synthesized in the process of alkcnyloxybenzoates hydrosilylation with linear polycarbosilanes having Si-H bonds. Properties of the resulting comb-like polymers basing on X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and DSC analysis were described.
