Copolymcrizalion of oxiranes and dioxolanones as a novel method for the synthesis of poly(elher-carbonale)

The course of copolymerization of 1,2-propylene oxide or epichlorohydrin with 1,2-propylcne carbonate and chloromcthylcthylene carbonate in the presence of BF3 OEt2 as an electrophilic initiator and PhONa – 1 8 - C – 6 crown ether as a nucleophilic initiator was investigated. The reaction products were characterized by means of IR, 'H-NMR and l3C-NMR spectroscopy and by molecular weight determinations. The products obtained with a cationic initiator at temperatures in the range of 15-20°C appeared to be low-molecular- weight copolymers – poly(cthcr carbonate)s containing below 50 mole-% of carbonate linkages connecting adjacent units in predominant tail-to-tail arrangement. It was found that in the presence of nucleophilic initiators no copolymers were formed and that homopolymerization of oxirane under their effect did not take place in the presence of alkylcne carbonate – the reasons for these phenomena were given.
