Cross-linking of acrylate pressure sensitive adhesives dispersions

Summary

This review presents general characteristics of water-based acrylate pressure sensitive adhesive dispersions (properties, applications, monomers used for synthesis). Detailed discussion has been given of cross-linking processes of such adhesives using chemical agents (unsaturated monomers, monomers with functional groups, other non-acryl monomers, multifunctional propyleneimines, metal acetylacetonates and organic acid salts). Cross-linking of pressure sensitive adhesives under UV radiation was also discussed, concentrating mainly on the types of radical photoinitiator types used (conventional or unsaturated — capable of participating in the polymerization), as well as photoinitiators capable of participating in the addition process. UV sources were described, with special attention to excimer lasers.
