Crystallization of oligomeric substrates forming flexible segments in urethane and urethane-urea elastomers

Summary

Oligo(ethylene adipate) (OAE) is widely used as an oligomeric substrate of the soft domains in segmented urethane elastomers. Crystallization of OAE was investigated to explore possibilities of the planned choice of the form of soft domains and their prepolymeric precursors. Two selected organic pigments (indigo and Echt Blau B) were checked as heteronuclei in the crystallization of OAE. With the molten oligomer of a suitably selected thermal history they considerably accelerated the crystallization and probably relaxed internal stresses in the crystallized material. The Echt Blau В pigment was more efficient in accelerating the crystallization process. Some parameters of the OAE melt thermal history affect not only the efficiency of the homonucleation process, but also the course of association of the organic pigment molecules dissolved in the oligomer melt, which in turn determines the formation of particles able to act as heteronuclei.
