Determination of hydroxyl groups in acetone medium by reaction with phthalic anhydride catalyzed by imidazole

Summary

Primary hydroxyl groups react quantitatively with phthalic anhydride in acetone medium in the presence of imidazole at room temperature within 30 minutes. To obtain quantitative acylation of secondary hydroxyl groups it is necessary to work at a higher temperature (45°C) during a longer period of time (45 minutes) and a concentration of imidazole increased from 0.375 g/25 ml acetone to 1.125—2.0 g/25 ml acetone. This method has been used for the determination of hydroxyl groups in polyoxyethylene glycols, amidated polyoxyethylene glycols and alkyd resins. A detailed analytical procedure has been given.
