Determination of the cross-linking degree
of thermosetting plastics by the penetration method
The importance of various methods used for the evaluation of the degree of cross-linking of articles moulded from thermosetting plastic materials has been discussed and the usefulness of simple and rapid methods based on the measurement of hardness and hot penetration has been stressed. By modifying Höppler consistometer, an apparatus has been constructed for the hot penetration method under load. The values of penetration have been measured for specimens moulded from different thermosetting moulding compositions under various conditions of time and temperature and subjected to additional heat treatment (aftercuring). It has been found that this method is useful in an indirect evaluation of the state of curing of mouldings from thermosetting materials.
