Summary

Various filtration devices used for molten plastics in recycling processes have been reviewed. The general recycling rules are given, related to material nature, level of impurities, etc. The objectives, techniques and related data concerning periodical and continuous filtration processes are presented. Periodic filtration systems involving plate and cylindric filters and continuous filtration systems including a few more interesting commercial designs are reviewed in more detail. The filter is the crucial element of the device. Filter types, from wire to plates, are discussed at length. The weaves used in wire filters and the weave-related shapes of mesh are presented. Filter materials used for filtering plastics above 350°C and for aggressive plastics are also characterized. Filtration efficiency and cost are presented in relation to filtration technique and impurities content.
