Ecological isophthalic unsaturated polyester resin for the shipbuilding

The course of synthesis of isophthalic unsaturated polyesters on the basis of isophthalic acid, maleic anhydride, 1,2-propylene glycol and diethylene glycol in the presence of selected metal oxides and salts as esterification catalysts in a two-stage process has been investigated. The most efficient catalysts were: manganous acetate and a 10:1:1 mixture of isobutyl titanate, ammonium molybdate and reduced iron. The mechanical strength and thermal properties of poliester resins prepared under these conditions, as well as their chemical resistance and resistance to photooxidative ageing have been determined. The isophthalic polyester resin has been modified with a hydroxyester, what resulted in a considerable reduction of styrene emission during resin processing into glass-fibre reinforced laminates, also under industrial scale conditions.
