Energetic and recycling aspects of plastics use in the construction of cars

Polimery 1993, No 2, 74

DOI: dx.doi.org/10.14314/polimery.1993.074

Summary

The use of plastics in cars makes them lighter. A reduction of car weight by 1 kg diminishes fuel consumption by 0.004—0.006 litre/100 km. Thus, application of plastics in cars not only reduces energy consumption during manufacture of cars, but it also lowers pollution of atmosphere, mainly due to a decrease of C02 emission from the combustion of fuel. The establishment of a system of plastics recycling from used cars is now an important task in Poland, these plastics being a valuable but hitherto unexploited source of raw materials.
