Summary

An environmental assessment of biocomposites with PP or PLA matrices reinforced with natural fibres (cotton fibers, cellulose, jute fiber and kenaf) and glass fibre, was carried out using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. Four methods were employed to determine the indicators of greenhouse gas emission (IPCC), renewable and non-renewable energy demand (CED) and land use (Ecological footprint) as well as the influence of composites on human health, ecosystem quality and fossil resource consumption (Ecoindicator 99 H/A). It was found that reinforcing the polymer matrix with cotton fibres is the least advantageous to the environment, while the lowest environmental impact was assessed for the composites of PLA and PP with cellulose fibre.
