Estimation of the curing degree of thick-walled rubber articles

To estimate the degree of cure in thick-walled rubber articles, t phenomenon of decomposition of the polysulfide bonds and formation with zinc sulfide as a by -product during the vulcanization process has been utilized. The effect of the natural rubber content in rubber mixture, type of curing system and temperature and time of vulcanization on the content of sulfur under the form of ZnS in cured rubber has been determined. Data concerning the dependence between this content and some mechanical properties of cured rubber (tensile strength at rupture, 300%-modulus, peel strength) have been presented. Examples of practical application of the method for production con trol in a tyres factory have been given.
