Evaluation of the methods for determining the strength of polimer film-containing adhesive joints

Polimery 1998, No 10, 590

DOI: dx.doi.org/10.14314/polimery.1998.590

The difference between adhesion and the adhesive strength is characterized. Major methods for determining the adhesive joint strength in the substrate—adhesive—polymer film system are described. The methods are subdivided into two grups: direct (destructive) and indirect (not always destructive). In the direct group, there are methods in which the whole area of the joint becomes immediately and entirely destroyed, and methods in which destruction of the joint is extended in time. Eight direct methods and five indirect methods are described in more detail, including major applications and limitations. The applicability of the methods is discussed with respekt to joint type and repeatability of results.

Keywords: adhesion, adhesive strength, substrate—adhesive—polymer film systems, methods for determining adhesive strength
