GPC analysis of the changes in chemical composition of solutions formed in reaction

of toluylene 2,4-diisocyanate (2,4-TDI) with 1,4-butanediol

Using the model urethane oligomers standards, the chemical composition and molecular weight distribution of polyurethane (PUR) formed in the reaction of 2,4-TDI with 1,4-butanediol was determined by the GPC method. For the interpretation of chromatograms, the kinetic scheme of step polyaddition was adopted. The calibration equation based on the elution peaks of model carbamates was derived and the initial compounds according to the scheme were identified. It has been ascertained that this method can be used for the analysis of changes in chemical composition of PUR during the initial stages of their manufacturing in commercial scale processes.
