Gas chromatographic determination of free formaldehyde in resins and plastic materials

Two gas chromatographic methods are presented for determination of free formaldehyde as its 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone and by reduction to methanol. The sensitivity limits is respectively 1 ppm and 10 ppm (or 100 ppm when theme thanol is present in the sample). The quantitative results are obtained by reference to an internal standards. The mean relative standard deviations of the two methods are 0.09 and 0.16, respectively. Application of the methods for determined of free formaldehyde in resins and plastic materials are presented.
