Graft copolymerization of acrylamide into starch initiated by a redox system of Ce4+ — Ce3+ ions.

Part I. Synthesis of graft starch co polymers

Summary

The effect of starch concentration (1-6%) in aqueous solutions, acrylamide/starch molar ratio (0.2:1-8:1), temperature (30-90 °C), time of reaction (to 24 h) and concentration of Ce4+ ions (1.04-9.8 mmoles/l) on the yield and degree of grafting of polyacrylamide onto starch and on the molecular weight of graft copolymer was investigated. Yield of grafting of 30-40% was attained. An analysis of the reproducibility of results was carried out, too. The mean quadratic error was about 1.5, what is a satisfactory result. A simple method for the preparation of pure starch-graft-polyacrylamide polymers was elaborated.
