Graft copolymerization of acrylamide onto starch initiated by redox system of Ce4+ —> Ce3+ ions.
The yield of polyacrylamide grafting onto starch using Na2S2O8, KMnO4, Ce(SO4)2•4H2O and a system consisting of Ce(SO4)2•4H2O+ KMnO4 as initiators has been compared. The last system was the most effective — the yield of grafting was up to 70%. Analysis of IR spectra of these copolymers allowed the determination of the kind of nitrogen containing groups existing there. X-ray patterns of copolymers revealed their amorphous character regardless of the grafting degree. Starch-graft-polyacrylamidehad thermal stability up to 200—250°C as determined by derivatographic analysis.
