Summary


The synthesis of two groups of polymers and their pro­perties are presented: a) chemically modified unsaturated polyester resins based on naphthalene and its derivatives, and b) heterocyclic stepladder polymers of the poly[bis(benzimidazobenzisoquinolinone)] and poly[oxyarylene bis(acenaphthequinoxaline)] type obtained from coal-tar derived ace- naphthene. Polymers of the first group are a new class of thermo­setting materials with good mechanical properties and high thermal and chemical resistance. They may be used for the manufacture of engineering laminates, in the form of cast resins, as mouldings or as binders. The second group polymers are suitable for the production of the H-class electroinsulating materials, e.g. films, fibres and moulded pieces.
