Summary

The influence of trace contaminants on degradation, branching and crosslinking processes in suspension polyvinyl chloride (s-PVC), induced by UV irradiation of 254 nm, has been studied. It has been found from solubility, intrinsic viscosity, the Huggins constant, gelling dose and the Charlesby-Pinner coefficient that crosslinking of s-PVC is hindered and its degradation is accelerated in the presence of cyclohexanone trace contaminant. Industrial contaminants, soluble in hot water and methanol, slightly influence the course of photochemical reactions. The opposite effect, i.e. the retardation of degradation and acceleration of crosslinking, is observed in the presence of these industrial contaminants.
