Investigation of the effect of the dispersing system on the properties of the suspension poly(vinyl chloride)
The effect of the composition of the dispersing system, comprising a mixture of methylhydroxypropylcellulose (MHPC) and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVAL) on the properties of suspension-polymerized poly(vinyl chloride) was investigated. Two types of HPC differing in average molecular weight and content of hydroxypropylene groups and several types of PVAL in a broad range o f molecular weights and degrees of hydrolysis (25–80 mole %) were applied. It was determined the plasticizer absorptivity, bulk density and diameter o f the obtained PVC-S grains. I t was found that types of P VA L with low molecular weight and low degree of hydrolysis (25–50%) which are soluble in v in y l chloride, can be used as a uxiliary dispersants. To these types of PVAL belong e.g. Atlas G72143 or Alcotex 55002H. With the use of them PVC-S grains of high porosity are obtained, capable of absorbing high amounts o f processing adjuvants, e.g. of plasticizers.
