Investigations on the styrene – divinylbenzene methylenethiol ion exchangers
The synthesis and properties of the gel-like and macroporous styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers containing methylenethiol —CH2SH functional groups have been described. The chemical structure and thermal stability of such ion exchangers have been determined and their sorption and redox properties investigated. Interesting features were revealed by the macroporous cation exchanger only. The sorption capacity of this exchanger in relation to 27 cations has been characterized and in the case of Hg2+, Ag+, Au3+, Pb2+ and Pd2+ the dependence of this capacity on the acidity of medium has been investigated. The sorption and reduction of Ag+ and Au3+ cations and the sorption and desorption of Hg2+ cation in the ion exchanger have been determined. The oxidation susceptibility of the —CH2SH group under the action of oxidants has been also investigated.
